Does your vehicle appear on the Motor Insurance Database?

- Published Date (18 Oct 2007)

The MID is a list of vehicles which are known to be insured. It links in to the DVLA database and is used to enable the authorities to know whether a vehicle is insured by simply looking at these lists. If a vehicle doesn't appear on the MID then as far as the police are concerned it's not insured unless you can prove it is. Sort of guilty until proved innocent! If the police read your number plate with their in car cameras, check the MID and it doesn't appear they will stop you and can impound the vehicle until insurance is proved. The responsibility for putting this information on the database can be either yours , your insurance adviser's or more commonly for the private motorist the Insurer's. Commercial motor vehicle or car fleet operators will probably retain the responsibility for updating the database as changes occur as will Motor Traders though arrangements can be made with brokers and others to do this on their behalf. Changes of vehicles though need to be advised to either the MID direct or whoever is responsible in a timely fashion because ultimately the consequences of a vehicle not being on the database come back to the vehicle owner. The MID is having great success in getting uninsured motorists off the road. They cost us all money and sometimes a lot of grief and heartache so it's got to be supported. Just don't get caught out and suffer at least the inconvenience of being unnecessarilly stopped or worse. You can now check yourself whether your vehicle is present and correct on the MID by going to www.askmid.com and simply putting in your vehicle registration number whereupon you'll hopefully get a green light and confirmation of the make and model of your car. You can get to the site from the link opposite. For any further information on the MID give us a call.
