They have a remit to provide high quality security and business monitoring systems that are affordable to businesses no matter their size in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Business Crime Reduction Unit (BCRU), was originally formed to work alongside Action Against Business Crime (AABC) which was formed as a partnership between the Home Office and the British Retail Consortium, an independent not for profit organisation with a sole purpose to reduce acquisitive crime across all sectors of business. “The BCRU initiative; to ensure every viable UK based business that wants or needs professionally installed; monitored and maintained security gets it at a price they can afford.” Government figures suggest nearly one in five businesses suffer a major disruption every year. Further research suggests 80% of businesses affected by a major incident close down within 18 months, and 90% of those who lose their data are forced to close down within two years. It is a fact that huge numbers of businesses are under insured and not properly protected. The majority of small and micro businesses choose to purchase the cheapest insurance rather than cover that offers their business the best chance of recovery should the worst happen. And a recent survey suggests that even when businesses have tried to purchase more suitable cover, insurers insist that they install security measures that ware outside of their financial capabilities. The financial leap from a bells only systems to a security system where insurers recognise the risk reduction benefits and allow a reduction in premium is a police response system. Whilst this leap affords insurers a measurable risk reduction it does mean that businesses have to increase their security budget to a point where some cannot afford it. Supported by AXA Insurance, Hiscox and Fortis, the UK’s major insurers, various Government Departments and almost all of the associations and federations serving British industry and commerce, the BCRU have introduced a range of security that is affordable to every business.
